About AftertheICU

AftertheICU (AICU) is an initiative founded by a collaborative team of doctors, former ICU patients, stakeholders, and healthcare professionals dedicated to improving the understanding and management of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) and Post-Intensive Care Syndrome for Families (PICS-F). Our mission is to provide comprehensive, accessible information to ICU survivors, their families, and medical professionals to support recovery and enhance the quality of life after critical illness. We aim to be a leading resource for the latest documentation, research, and best practices related to PICS and PICS-F.

Understanding PICS and PICS-F

Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) encompasses a range of physical, cognitive, and psychological impairments that can affect survivors of critical illness. These impairments often arise after an ICU stay and can significantly impact daily functioning and quality of life. Similarly, Post-Intensive Care Syndrome for Families (PICS-F) refers to the adverse effects experienced by family members and caregivers of ICU patients, including emotional and psychological distress. Our goal is to consolidate and disseminate all available information on the definition, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, evaluation, treatment, and outcomes of PICS and PICS-F to support better care and recovery for both patients and their families.

Our Mission

At AftertheICU, we are committed to addressing the knowledge gap regarding PICS and PICS-F. Advances in critical care medicine have led to an increasing number of ICU survivors, many of whom experience ongoing challenges in cognitive, mental health, and physical domains. We recognize the importance of providing accurate and comprehensive information to help these individuals and their families navigate the recovery process. Our mission is to develop an extensive online library of documentation and resources, making it easier for medical professionals and affected individuals to access vital information and support.

Contributing to Our Resource Library

We invite medical professionals, researchers, and other stakeholders to contribute to our online library by sharing links to websites, articles, research papers, and other relevant materials on Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS). By collaborating with experts and utilizing their knowledge, we aim to enhance our repository and ensure that it serves as a valuable resource for the global medical community and those affected by critical illness.
